Nintendo has officially disclosed the file sizes for the highly anticipated upcoming Switch remasters, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD.
Initially unveiled during the September 2023 Nintendo Direct, both titles have generated significant excitement among fans. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door marks a long-awaited remaster of the beloved GameCube original, while Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD represents a complete port, transitioning the classic title from the Nintendo 3DS to the Switch. Additionally, both remasters promise to introduce new gameplay features and revamped graphics.
Although the initial trailers provided a release window of 2024, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD received official launch dates during MAR10 day celebrations. The Thousand-Year Door remaster is set to debut first on May 23, followed by the release of Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD on June 27. With these release dates fast approaching, Nintendo has updated its Nintendo eShop listings with the file sizes for digital downloads, offering fans insight into the required storage space.
According to information from Nintendo’s official website and the respective Switch eShop pages, both Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD boast relatively modest file sizes compared to other games on the system. The Thousand-Year Door requires 5.088 GB, while Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD comes in at 3.101 GB on the Nintendo Switch. For context, the last Paper Mario installment on the Switch, The Origami King, occupied around 6.4 GB, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 required 6.3 GB of storage.
The smaller file sizes for The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD align with their status as remasters of the original games. When Luigi’s Mansion 2 debuted on the Nintendo 3DS as Dark Moon, many of its assets were likely compressed to accommodate the handheld system, with the game occupying approximately 842 MB. Meanwhile, the original GameCube version of The Thousand-Year Door was roughly 1.1 GB, making the Switch remaster five times larger. The increased file sizes for both titles likely stem from Nintendo’s comprehensive remastering efforts.
With the upcoming releases of Princess Peach Showtime, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, the Nintendo Switch boasts an impressive lineup of exclusives for 2024.
