Following a September 17 update to the Rockstar Games launcher on PC, a source has revealed that metadata for Red Dead Redemption was briefly included in the update before being quickly patched out.
While the game is available on modern consoles, an official PC version has yet to be released by Rockstar Games.
Originally launched in 2010, Red Dead Redemption serves as a spiritual successor to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver. Set in 1911 during the decline of the American West, it tells the story of former Van der Linde gang member John Marston. Using his family as leverage, Marston is compelled by the Bureau of Investigation to track down three of his former gang members, including his mentor and friend, Dutch van der Linde. The gang’s backstory is further explored in the critically acclaimed prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, known for its stunning graphics and immersive gameplay.
While rumors should always be taken with caution, the latest speculation about a Red Dead Redemption PC port may carry some weight. According to Twitter user TezFunz2, Rockstar Games inadvertently included metadata for Red Dead Redemption in the September 17 launcher update.
Additionally, they noted that application data related to the game appeared in Steam’s internal database (via SteamDB) on the same day, although it is currently private and not visible to the public. This update coincided with Grand Theft Auto Online’s introduction of the BattlEye anti-cheat software on PC.
Key points to note:
– The Rockstar Games Launcher update revealed folders associated with Red Dead Redemption on PC.
– Steam’s internal database also showed data linked to the game.
– Rockstar Games swiftly removed this data after it was discovered by fans.
– There has been no official statement from Rockstar Games regarding a PC version of Red Dead Redemption.
In response to TezFunz2’s findings, other users shared additional evidence, including folders named after Red Dead Redemption and the current-gen release of Grand Theft Auto V, along with screenshots confirming these changes. Although speculation about a PC version has circulated since Red Dead Redemption was ported to the PS4 and Switch in 2023, this latest discovery may be one of the strongest indicators that a PC version is on the horizon.
From exploring the vast landscapes of the Old West to the thrilling adventures in the Undead Nightmare expansion, Red Dead Redemption remains one of the most beloved Western-themed games in recent years. Only time will reveal whether a PC port of Red Dead Redemption will soon be available.
