League of Legends MMO development reset!

Fans eagerly anticipating news about the League of Legends MMO will be disappointed to hear that its development has been reset.
Riot Games initially teased the MMO in 2019, shortly before launching the popular first-person shooter, Valorant.

Despite the hope that the League of Legends MMO would follow a similar timeline to Valorant’s announcement and release, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill shared the unfortunate news of the reset more than four years after confirming its development. This decision mirrors Nintendo’s approach with Metroid Prime 4, which faced a similar restart two years after its 2017 announcement.

In a series of tweets, Merrill explained that the reset was necessary to avoid creating an MMO that feels generic with a “Runeterra coat of paint.” While he didn’t provide a release timeline, Merrill mentioned that the team would go dark for several years, indicating a significant period without updates. Despite the lack of recent information since the MMO’s confirmation in 2020, Merrill assured fans of the team’s dedication to delivering a unique and memorable experience.

The ongoing development is a positive sign, even though some fans feared the MMO might never see the light of day. Merrill’s message of “no news is good news” underscores the team’s commitment to crafting a game that resonates with players. He expressed gratitude for fans’ patience and emphasized Riot Games’ dedication to creating a beloved MMO.

The departure of ex-Blizzard designer Greg Street, who previously sparked speculation about the game’s release, and the appointment of Fabrice Condominas as the new executive producer, bring new energy to the project. Condominas, known for his work on Mass Effect 3, is excited about the opportunity and aims to deliver an exceptional gaming experience. While the development reset may disappoint some, it signifies the team’s dedication to quality over rushed releases.
