Research finds gaming to be connected to hearing loss!

A recent study suggests that individuals who enjoy playing video games may be exposing themselves to potential hearing damage due to unsafe sound levels.

The review, published in BMJ Public Health, indicates that gamers often play for extended periods with elevated volume, risking irreversible hearing loss or persistent ringing in the ears (tinnitus). The researchers, reviewing 14 studies involving over 50,000 participants, call for increased public health efforts to raise awareness, similar to campaigns for live music and headphones.

While adjusting the volume during gameplay can help minimize risk, the study emphasizes that prolonged exposure to high volumes is a significant concern. The World Health Organization recommends safe exposure to 80 decibels (dB) for 40 hours a week for adults. Above this level, the safe exposure time decreases rapidly. Some studies found average headphone noise levels in shooting games to be between 88.5 and 91.2dB, with impulse sounds reaching 119dB.

Notably, three studies revealed that boys tend to play video games more frequently and for longer durations at higher volumes than girls. While the study acknowledges the need for more research, it suggests prioritizing initiatives for education and awareness about the potential risks of gaming to promote safe listening habits.

Gaming industry body Ukie encourages headphone use within safe levels but refrains from commenting further on the study.

To protect your hearing while gaming, consider these tips:

  1.  Adjust the volume to around 50%.
  2.  Take regular breaks, at least 5 minutes every hour, to give your ears a rest.
  3.  If gaming in a noisy environment, use noise-cancelling headphones and avoid exceeding safe volume limits.
