Exciting news from New York Comic Con: the talented Matt Mercer, best known as the Dungeon Master of the beloved Critical Role series, is stepping into the shoes of gunslinger Vincent Valentine in Square Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This game is the second chapter in the epic remake of the iconic ‘90s Japanese role-playing classic.

The trailers we’ve seen so far have teased new locales and fresh faces, including Vincent Valentine, who didn’t make an appearance in the first chapter back in 2020. But hold onto your chocobos, because this remake isn’t just a straightforward rehash—it’s venturing into exciting new storylines. At NYCC, a panel featuring voice actors spilled some juicy details about what’s in store.

Now, here’s a fun tidbit. In the first installment of the remake, Matt Mercer lent his voice to some minor characters with names like “Wall Market Thug.” Fast forward to October 14, where Mercer spilled the beans on his audition for Valentine in Rebirth. He poured his heart and soul into it, only to hear crickets for nine long months. And when he finally got a callback, guess what? They told him he’d be voicing those unnamed NPCs again!

But here’s where things get wild. While he was in the recording booth, ready to voice yet another random character, the script screen started glitching out. Then, boom! It faded to black and presented him with none other than the role of Vincent Valentine. Talk about an epic reveal!

Get your calendars ready, because Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to drop on February 29, 2024, exclusively for PlayStation 5. Get ready to embark on a new adventure with Vincent and the crew!
