Sony still holds the key to the fate of Bloodborne!

2015 gave us Bloodborne, a game that captured the hearts of many with its unique blend of cosmic horror and challenging gameplay, much like a thrilling novel you can’t put down. However, despite fans eagerly awaiting a sequel, remaster, or remake, nothing has materialized. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creative mind behind Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Bloodborne, recently shed light on this silence, citing ownership issues.

In a chat with IGN discussing Elden Ring’s upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Miyazaki explained the reason for the prolonged silence: “Sadly, I can’t delve into Bloodborne specifics. It’s not in our hands at FromSoftware.”
So, who holds the reins of Bloodborne? Sony does. As both the publisher and with their now-defunct Japan Studio deeply involved in the game’s creation, Sony owns the IP.

This situation echoes the birth of the Souls genre, where Japan Studio and FromSoftware teamed up for Demon’s Souls in 2009. Sony’s hold on Demon’s Souls prevented a direct sequel, leading Miyazaki and team to birth the iconic Dark Souls series. Bloodborne follows a similar fate, locked under Sony’s ownership, meaning its fate rests solely with them, regardless of FromSoftware’s desires.

Despite the hush surrounding Bloodborne’s future, Miyazaki reminisces fondly about the project: “It holds a special place in my heart, even if I can’t discuss its future.” He also expressed joy seeing the continued passion fans have for the game. As for Sony, they’ve yet to reveal any plans for Bloodborne’s future, but with the surprise success of the 2020 Demon’s Souls remake, hope for a Bloodborne revival remains alive.
