Exciting news for Crazy Taxi fans! According to an interview with The Japan Times (via Eurogamer), Sapporo Studio president Takaya Segawa revealed that the upcoming addition to the series will be a “triple-A game.”
Crazy Taxi originally hit consoles back in 2000 with its debut on the Sega Dreamcast, captivating gamers everywhere. Since then, it has been ported to various platforms, including the PlayStation 2, Nintendo Gamecube, and PC. Although there have been sequels and spinoffs, the series has been relatively quiet for quite some time, with the last mainline release, Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller, launching in 2002.
The reboot was first hinted at in 2022 and officially confirmed in December 2023, though details have been scarce. While there hasn’t been much information since then, the initial reports suggested it would be a high-budget reboot, which seems to be the case as Segawa mentioned Sega’s Sapporo Studio’s involvement in the development of triple-A titles, including Crazy Taxi.
However, the term “triple-A” can sometimes be vague, often used to highlight a game’s significance rather than its specifics. Nonetheless, it suggests that Sega has grand plans for the new Crazy Taxi and is investing significant resources into its development.
As for a release date, that remains uncertain, with no mention made in the 2023 announcement or Segawa’s interview. In the meantime, if you’re eager to experience the thrill of Crazy Taxi, the original game is still available on Steam.
