A thrilling virtual reality experience set in the post-apocalyptic world of the beloved Metro franchise, Metro Awakening, has been officially revealed and is making its way to the PlayStation VR2.
This single-player game will also be accessible on other VR systems, promising an immersive journey into a dystopian world.
In a fictional realm scarred by nuclear war, inspired by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro novels, readers were given a gripping glimpse into the struggle for survival within Moscow’s underground railway system. These novels, which garnered immense popularity in Russia, were later transformed into video games by Ukrainian studio 4A Games.
Now, after nearly five years since the release of Metro Exodus, a new addition to the franchise has been unveiled.
During Sony’s recent State of Play presentation, a compelling trailer for Metro Awakening was showcased, announcing its anticipated arrival in 2024 for the PSVR 2, Steam VR, and Meta Quest systems.
Vertigo Games, the indie studio based in the Netherlands behind the acclaimed Arizona Sunshine 2, assured fans that Metro Awakening would deliver a fresh, story-driven VR adventure acting as a prequel to Glukhovsky’s Metro novels.
Vertigo Games promised to retain the beloved stealth sections and survival mechanics from previous Metro titles while leveraging
cutting-edge VR technology to enhance these aspects in Metro Awakening. Notably, Glukhovsky was actively involved in the development process, serving as a consultant for the story and lore. Despite facing a Moscow court sentence last August, Glukhovsky, living outside of Russia, contributed to the project.
Release Date: Expected in 2024
Metro Awakening created quite a buzz even before its official announcement at State of Play 2024, with online leaks suggesting the possibility of multiplayer – a feature absent in its predecessors,
Metro: 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus.
Sony’s State of Play event showcased a range of exciting games, with a spotlight on Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
Other upcoming titles, including Helldivers 2 and Zenless Zone Zero,
also grabbed attention. Existing releases made appearances, such as the vampire survival RPG V Rising coming to PS5 in 2024 and Stellar Blade arriving on the console in April. Metro Awakening is poised to join this lineup, offering gamers an enthralling adventure in a desolate,
post-apocalyptic world.
