The mastermind behind Helldivers 2, Arrowhead’s CEO Johan Pilestedt, has stepped up to discuss the game’s microtransactions,
emphasizing its commitment to avoiding the ‘pay-to-win’ label.
Priced at $39.99, Helldivers 2 is a cooperative shooter where players join forces to combat alien bugs and menacing automatons. Despite gaining immense popularity, especially as Sony’s biggest PC launch, the game has sparked some discussions about its monetization model. The inclusion of both free and premium battle passes, featuring gameplay-affecting items, has raised questions about potential ‘pay-to-win’ elements.
In response to the debate, Pilestedt addressed concerns on Twitter / X, stating, “I’m partial, but we really applied ourselves to not make it p2w even though items are functionally different.” He acknowledged that the only potentially ‘pay-to-win’ item is the revolver, humorously adding, “which will win you any ‘cool gun’ competition. Only (minor) problem is that it’s not that good.”
Emphasizing a player-centric approach, Pilestedt expressed, “You have to earn the right to monetize.” He firmly believes in giving players the choice to support the title without coercion. The game’s virtual currency,
including medals and super credits, can be earned through gameplay, albeit at a slower pace.
Despite initial hurdles with login issues and progression glitches,
Helldivers 2 has garnered positive reviews from both Steam users and PS5 players. Pilestedt issued an apology for the server struggles and explained the challenges faced due to an overwhelming number of players. Additionally, the Helldivers 2 community has organically developed a cooperative etiquette, contributing to the overall positive gaming experience.
