IBM created AI-powered storage security to stop ransomware!

IBM has introduced a new AI-assisted storage security technology designed to combat ransomware, now integrated into their enterprise-tier FlashCore modules. This innovative system works by continuously scanning all input/output data in real time, preventing unauthorized encryption attempts before they can cause harm.

In a recent blog post (credit to Tom’s Hardware for sharing), IBM addressed the growing concern among businesses about ransomware threats.
They cited a report indicating that 89% of organizations consider ransomware to be one of their top five threats to viability, highlighting the seriousness of the issue beyond casual IT discussions.

IBM describes their technology, named “IBM Storage Defender,”
as incorporating AI-powered sensors developed by IBM Research.
These sensors are specifically engineered to swiftly detect ransomware and other advanced threats with high precision. By alerting security tools to potential breaches, Defender helps minimize the impact of attacks and aids in the recovery process for affected enterprises.

Utilizing AI to identify ransomware attacks is a crucial development.
While intercepting malicious code execution can be challenging,
ransomware typically requires some time to encrypt data, offering a window of opportunity for interception before significant damage occurs.

Targeted primarily at large, security-conscious enterprise customers,
IBM’s solution may not immediately translate to consumer-level products. However, with the integration of AI hardware in current and future CPUs, similar functionalities could potentially reach consumer PCs in the future.

Initial skepticism about AI-enabled SSDs aside, the effectiveness of this technology against ransomware is commendable. While skepticism about AI hype is understandable, the urgency to combat ransomware attacks is clear and compelling.

Ransomware poses a global threat, impacting companies across various industries, including gaming giants like Bandai Namco, Sony, Capcom,
and even tech leaders like Nvidia. Any solution that effectively halts ransomware attacks deserves recognition and support.
