Alone in the Dark better off dead and buried!

The eerie environments, paranormal entities, and tormented protagonists of Alone in the Dark were a precursor to the likes of Resident Evil, Alan Wake, or Silent Hill. However, this remake would have been better off left in 1992.

Described by its creators as a love letter to the ’90s cult classic, this remake is indeed a retelling of the story. Players take on the role of private detective Edward Carnby, searching for the missing Jeremy Hartwood in 1920s Louisiana. Much of the mysterious quest unfolds within Derceto Manor,
an institution with a penchant for mazes.

Players can also opt to play as Emily, the niece of the missing person. Though the makers claim this offers a completely different storyline,
the differences are minimal. Cutscenes and reactions from Derceto’s residents may vary, but the overall gameplay remains largely the same.

One of the game’s drawbacks is the lackluster combat. Weapons feel basic, and the combat mechanics are clunky compared to modern standards.
Even the puzzles, while challenging, offer some respite with helpful hints and sub-goals to guide players.

Ultimately, this failed homage falls short in comparison to its predecessors. While the original Alone in the Dark may hold cult status, this remake fails to capture the essence of its genre. It’s a reminder that the survival horror genre has evolved, leaving its forebearers behind.
