After a prolonged absence, Blizzard’s flagship games are set to make a comeback in China. Tonight, Blizzard announced a fresh deal with NetEase, reinstating titles like World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and others from the Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, and StarCraft series to the Chinese gaming market. The agreement, effective this summer, marks a significant partnership revival.
Blizzard’s president, Johanna Faries, expressed excitement over rekindling ties with NetEase, emphasizing their shared commitment to delivering exceptional gaming experiences to Chinese players. Recognizing the longstanding support from the Chinese community, Blizzard aims to reintroduce its beloved universes with unwavering dedication.
Previously, NetEase had been Blizzard’s publishing partner in mainland China since 2008. However, after the expiration of their initial agreement in January 2023, negotiations faltered, leading to a hiatus in Blizzard’s presence in the region. Speculations surrounding a potential reunion circulated, fueled by leaked photos and reports hinting at upcoming announcements.
With Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard and its approval by the Chinese government in 2023, the path to reconciliation seemed clearer.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, commended the collaboration between Blizzard and NetEase, affirming Microsoft’s commitment to expanding gaming accessibility globally.
Now confirmed, this reunion signals a renewed dedication to the Chinese gaming community, promising a vibrant return of Blizzard’s iconic titles to the region’s gaming landscape.
