Following the launch of Daggerfall Unity, the recreated version of Bethesda’s beloved The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall, the creator,
Gavin Clayton, is embarking on a new project.
This upcoming game will be an original title inspired by The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall, sharing some of the qualities that made Daggerfall Unity a success.
Despite being older than more popular titles like Skyrim and Morrowind, Daggerfall is considered one of the most expansive Elder Scrolls open-world RPGs. Set in the Tamriel provinces of High Rock and Hammerfell, Daggerfall boasts a massive map, speculated to cover hundreds of thousands of square kilometers—nearly the size of real-world nations like the United Kingdom. Crossing the map can take dozens of real-life hours, offering thousands of locations and diverse biomes for players to explore. Daggerfall Unity, created by Gavin Clayton, was a comprehensive mod that brought the original game’s content to the Unity game engine.
In a recent interview with DualShockers, Clayton announced that he and his team are actively developing a new game in the style of Daggerfall. Although the game currently lacks an official name, Clayton expressed his intention to infuse it with the experience gained over a decade of developing Daggerfall Unity. While acknowledging the challenges of creating a new game compared to a porting project, Clayton expressed satisfaction if the new title receives even a fraction of the acclaim bestowed upon Daggerfall Unity.
While details about the new game are limited at this point, Clayton shared that it will be an original work in the “same vein” as The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall Unity. He emphasized that, as a fan of such games, the new title will feature a large world to explore, reminiscent of Daggerfall,
and intricate systems to master. Additionally, mod support will be a key feature, building on the success of numerous mods developed for Daggerfall.
The development of the game has already commenced, leading Clayton to scale back his involvement in his IT Managed Services business to dedicate more time to this passion project.
The immense scale and depth of Bethesda’s sandbox RPGs continue to inspire generations of players and developers. Even as new players discover the appeal of older Elder Scrolls titles like Daggerfall,
developers like Clayton are making their mark on the gaming industry by adding their unique contributions to this beloved franchise.
