Today at GDC, Roblox introduced two AI technologies aimed at simplifying 3D modeling for its diverse community of creators.
These tools are designed to automate the preparation of 3D models for animation and generate textures using AI, offering a way to ease creative tasks or speed up content creation.
The first tool, Avatar Auto Setup, streamlines the rigging process for humanoid models, making them ready for animation, such as for use as a Roblox avatar. According to Roblox, with just a click, Auto Setup can rig, cage, segment, and skin 3D models, reducing what could take days to mere minutes. The second tool, Texture Generator, utilizes predictive image generation to produce textures for 3D objects based on text prompts.
Nick Tornow, Vice President of Creator Engineering at Roblox, expressed the company’s commitment to empowering creation for all individuals, emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility.
Demo footage showcases the Avatar Auto Setup tool processing a mannequin for avatar use, demonstrating its automated rigging with a standard running animation. The model is then dressed with Roblox cosmetics, showcasing the practical application of the generated attachment points. Additionally, the Texture Generator is demonstrated on various 3D models, effectively applying textures based on different prompts, though the results appear more like starting points for further customization rather than finished products.
