Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t be available on PC right at launch, and there’s a good reason behind it, according to a former Rockstar developer.
The developers are focusing on what sells best initially,” explained the ex-staffer. The much-anticipated GTA 6 was officially announced on December 4 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with plans to arrive sometime in 2025.
Although the announcement didn’t include PC, fans speculated that it won’t release there at launch. This isn’t unusual for Rockstar, as the last game in the main series to debut simultaneously on PC and consoles was GTA 2 in the late ’90s.
Mike York, a former Rockstar animator, supports this view. He recently suggested that developing the PC version of GTA 6 might take longer. In a YouTube video on December 11, he explained how Rockstar tends to prioritize platforms based on sales. He recalled his experience with GTA 5, where even though both Xbox 360 and PS3 versions were developed together, PS3 was the initial focus.
York emphasized that while PC gaming has been growing, optimizing games for PC involves catering to a wide range of hardware, making it more challenging. He believes this will be the case for GTA 6, leading to a delay in its PC release.
Recognizing the increasing popularity of PC gaming, York hinted that trends might change. However, optimizing for fewer platforms remains easier. He noted that Rockstar historically faced difficulties in optimizing for PC due to the variety of configurations.
He urged fans to be patient, assuring them that Rockstar is striving to deliver an exceptional game. While there’s no confirmed PC release date yet, considering the console release in late 2025, a 2027 PC launch isn’t entirely out of the question.
