We’ve got some updates on Cities: Skylines 2, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The sequel won’t have mod support right from the start, as Paradox Interactive has confirmed. But don’t worry; there’s a good reason for this!

You see, the original Cities: Skylines, which we all love, became a city-building legend in part thanks to its fantastic modding support. It turned the game into an endless world of possibilities. However, for the sequel, things are going to be a bit different. At the launch, Cities: Skylines 2 won’t support third-party mods. Why? Well, it’s because they’re introducing a new way to handle mods. Instead of relying on platforms like Steam Workshop, they’re introducing their own modding platform called Paradox Mods.

The reason behind this change is “inclusivity.” Paradox wants to make sure mods are available not only on PC but also on consoles. The original game only allowed modding on PC, so they’re trying to broaden the horizons for all gamers.

The catch is that this shift to Paradox Mods will take some extra development time, so it won’t be available on day one. But Paradox is confident that it’ll be worth the wait.

Currently, Cities: Skylines 2’s mod support is in closed beta, and they’ve invited some experienced third-party content creators to join in. They’re working hard to make sure there are plenty of mods to enhance your gameplay.

It’s essential to note that the sequel is built on an entirely new codebase, so mods created for the original game won’t work directly in Cities: Skylines 2.

Now, there’s another bit of news. The game’s performance didn’t meet the initial target, which led to a raise in the system requirements. While this suggests the game might not be perfectly optimized at launch, the decision was made to go ahead with its release in 2023. However, the release date for the console versions has been delayed to June 30, 2024.

So, mark your calendars! Cities: Skylines 2 is coming to PC on October 24, with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions arriving a bit later in 2024. Get ready to build and manage your dream cities all over again!
